Laboratory Genetics & Genomics

The two-year ACGME-accredited Laboratory Genetics and Genomics (LGG) program at the University of Pittsburgh is committed to training experts and leaders in the laboratory-based disciplines of medical genetics and genomics.  We accept one fellow per year, for a total of two fellows at a time.

Our program takes advantage of the close proximity of the Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory, Clinical Genomics Laboratory, Prenatal Screening Laboratory, Molecular Genetic Pathology Laboratory and Medical Genetics Clinics on campus to better integrate the fellow’s training activities and to ensure exposure to a variety of prenatal, postnatal and oncological cases.

Program Aims:

  • Provide a comprehensive laboratory training experience in cytogenetics and molecular genetics sufficient to evaluate and interpret genomic data and communicate results to providers, develop and validate new assays, and direct a clinical testing laboratory.
  • Provide a range of clinical experience through attendance in genetics clinics including prenatal, pediatric, adult and hereditary cancer.
  • Provide a solid core of scientific knowledge through didactic education in human genetics including formal course work, case conferences, seminars and lectures.
  • Provide the skills and opportunity to present and publish interesting cases and research findings.
  • Ensures that all fellows develop professional competencies to the level expected of a new practitioner in medical genetics.
