Urogynecology

The Division of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is one of the largest urogynecology divisions in the country with 10 attending physicians.

Residents have a dedicated urogynecology rotation during the third year of residency.   The resident on the urogynecology service manages inpatients and consults with the FPMRS fellows.  The time in urogynecology is primarily spent in the operating room or the office learning about pelvic floor disorders.  Residents may also spend time on urogynecology during an elective rotation.

The division is committed to resident education.  In addition to teaching in the operating room and office, we strengthen residents' surgical skills through simulation including vaginal hysterectomy models, cadaver labs, and robotic simulation.  The division conducts a weekly conference in addition to weekly fellow didactic sessions that the resident on service attends.

The division has a strong track record of research and resident mentoring.  Some of those resident research projects have been recognized by national awards by the American Urogynecologic Society and the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons.  The Division Director, Dr. Pamela Moalli, has a basic science lab investigating mesh for prolapse repair and its complications.  She also investigates regenerative techniques to rebuild compromised vaginal supportive tissues. Residents have an opportunity to gain basic science research experience by rotating in Doctor Moalli’s lab.  In addition to individual faculty research projects, we are one of seven urogynecology sites included in the Pelvic Floor Disorders Network, an NIH-sponsored multicenter research collaborative.
