Department of OBGYN

Welcome

We hope that our website provides you with all the information necessary for you to determine if our program is a good fit for you as you explore your options for your obstetrics and gynecology residency training.

Chair's Welcome

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our website describing our Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program here at UPMC which is among the top programs in the country. I am a product of this residency and have a great deal of pride in the development and expansion of the clinical training services we currently offer. The training program is led by Dr. Kristiina Parviainen who transitioned to this position in May of 2019 after being the associate program director for 10 years. The residency program consistently ranks in the top 5 by Doximity for programs in obstetrics and gynecology. We have faculty experts in every field of obstetrics and gynecology, a large primary care obstetrics and gynecology community network, and a well-trained and academically superb collection of obstetrics and gynecology specialists. We have numerous well-funded investigators at the Magee-Womens Research Institute, which is the most highly funded research institute for women’s health in the country.

The real crown jewel of our training program is our hospital and network. UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is synonymous with excellence in patient care, and one of our greatest attributes is our long legacy of training outstanding academic and community clinical obstetrics and gynecology physicians. It is humbling to me as the current chair of this prestigious department that I join a legacy of chairs and residency directors who have come before me to help make this such a prestigious and well-respected program. From my chairman during my training, Dr. T. Terry Hayashi, a legacy of teaching continues to be a long-standing commitment to resident and fellow education. The lifeblood of our academic department and clinical patient care excellence is both fuel for and a product of an outstanding residency training environment. We are completely transparent about our approach to resident training and our commitment to training excellence and are happy to answer any questions as you scrutinize and review our program.

Best regards,

Robert P. Edwards, MD
Chair

Program Director's Welcome

Welcome to the website of the UPMC Medical Education Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency, located at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Our residency strives to deliver comprehensive training for aspiring obstetrician-gynecologists. The residency experience combines academic rigor with clinical care excellence at the cutting edge of obstetrics and gynecology practice.

We structure the training program to offer a solid foundation for both generalist ob/gyn practice (approximately 43% of graduates) and subspecialty fellowship training (approximately 57% of graduates).  The residency experience is centered at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, which has a dual mission of delivering primary care for our community and serving as a regional referral center for subspecialty care. The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences and the Magee-Womens Research Institute serve as the academic home for diverse and accomplished faculty, who are dedicated role models, teachers, and mentors for our trainees. Please explore our website for details of our curriculum and learning environment.

Best,

Kristiina Parviainen, MD, MS
Residency Program Director

Chief Residents' Welcome

Welcome to Magee!  We are thrilled that you are considering our program and hope that our website will give you a glance into our daily lives as UPMC Ob/Gyn residents.  We are proud of our program and the excellent training we receive. We value the unique learning opportunities that working at a large referral center provides, and we are passionate about caring for our diverse and underserved patient population. Though we work hard, we also prioritize maintaining full lives outside of the hospital. The residents themselves and our relationships with each other are by far the best parts of our program!  Becoming a Magee resident means inheriting a second family, and we are excited for you to join us.  BAE
