Department of OBGYN

Welcome

Chair's Welcome Letter

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our website describing our Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program here at UPMC which is among the top programs in the country. I am a product of this residency and have a great deal of pride in the development and expansion of the clinical training services we currently offer. The training program is led by Dr. Gabriella Gosman who is considered one of the premiere residency directors in the country, and truly one of our greatest training resources here at UPMC. This residency program consistently ranks in the top 10 by Doximity for programs in obstetrics and gynecology. We have faculty experts in every field of obstetrics and gynecology, a large primary care obstetrics and gynecology community network, and a well- trained and academically superb collection of obstetrics and gynecology specialists. We have numerous well-funded investigators at the Magee-Womens Research Institute, which is the most highly funded research institute for women’s health in the country.

The real crown jewel of our training program is our hospital and network. Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC is synonymous with excellence in patient care, and one of our greatest attributes is our long legacy of training outstanding academic and community clinical obstetrics and gynecology physicians. It is humbling to me as the current chair of this prestigious department that I join a legacy of chairs and residency directors who have come before me to help make this such a prestigious and well-respected program. From my chairman during my training, Dr. T. Terry Hayashi, a legacy of teaching continues to be a long-standing commitment to resident and fellow education. The life blood of our academic department and clinical patient care excellence is both fuel for and a product of an outstanding residency training environment. We are completely transparent about our approach to resident training and our commitment to training excellence, and are happy to answer any questions as you scrutinize and review our program.

Best regards,

Robert P. Edwards, MD

Program Director's Welcome Letter

Welcome to the website of the UPMC Medical Education Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency, located at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC and affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Our residency delivers very special training for aspiring obstetrician gynecologists. The residency combines academic rigor with clinical care excellence at the cutting edge of obstetrics and gynecology practice.

Our three major aims include:

  • Provide intense clinical experience and didactics to acquire excellent skills required of the general obstetrician gynecologist.
  • Deliver diverse opportunities for individualized training to ensure residents make sound career decisions.
  • Prepare residents to serve as leaders and contributors in obstetrics and gynecology.

The UPMC Medical Education residency lays the optimal foundation for both generalist practice (approximately 50% of graduates) and fellowship training (approximately 50% of graduates). Magee-Womens Hospital focuses on the health of women throughout the lifespan and thus provides the optimal setting to deliver this training. The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences and the Magee-Womens Research Institute serve as the academic home for the huge, diverse, and accomplished faculty. This faculty teaches residents every day in the program.

I am extraordinarily grateful to have the privilege of working with such fabulous residents in such a superb learning environment.

Best,

Gabriella G. Gosman, MD
Residency Program Director

Chief Residents' Welcome Message

Welcome to UPMC!  We are so excited that you are considering our residency as your future home for the next four years. This website is intended to give you a glance into what life is like as a resident at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. Though we work very hard, we also prioritize maintaining full lives outside of the hospital. The residents are the best part of this program! We come from diverse backgrounds (age, geography, experiences, marital status, with children, with pets, etc.), but ultimately, this program serves as a second family for all of us. We hope that you will appreciate this as you learn more about our program.
