Vision
The Global Health Program in Reproductive Sciences (GHPRS) is a program designed to collaboratively reduce maternity and infant morbidity and mortality rates through academic enrichment of medical students, residents and faculty in developing countries.
Mission
To improve health care for women and infants in the United States and in developing countries.
Goals
This program will focus on the reciprocal relationship between International and Domestic health care by:
- Exploring the progress of the millennium development goals specifically as they relate to reducing maternal and infant morbidity and mortality.
- Developing strategies to promote Reproductive Health in other countries that provide valuable information when addressing these issues in our country.
- Exposing participants to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as: malaria, cholera, and tuberculosis that will assist participants in the prevention and potential spread of these diseases in our country.
- Exposing participants to diverse cultures in an attempt to broaden their cultural perspective.
- Enhancing the participants understanding of the differences in health care practices beliefs, and expectations will enhance global health care.
- Exposing participants to the opportunity to work in developing countries with limited resources which will provide a clearer perspective on our utilization and waste of valued medical supplies.
- To enhancing bi-directional clinical and research experiences for residents and faculty physicians in developing countries
- Encouraging participants to develop a life-long interest in global women’s health.
Components of the Global Health Program
1. Short Term International exposure (STIE)
2. Global Health Track (GHT)
Clinical Experience (STIE)
Participants will spend approximately 5 to 6 weeks working at a designated site practicing general OB/GYN as a mentor or mentee. In Collaboration with Global Links, a local non-profit organization that ships surplus medical supplies to developing countries, GHPRS participants will deliver specialty training “without borders” to Primary Care Physicians and practicing OB/GYN’s in developing countries.
Research Exposure (STIE)
Although a formalized research experience will not be arranged for Residents and medical students in such a short time frame, research exposure may be arranged with a current collaborative project. Faculty members may explore research opportunities as presented.
Eligible Participants (STIE)
Faculty, Residents (3rd year) and Medical Students (4th year) currently in good academic standing. Medical Students may elect to participate in the International Elective in Global Health in the Reproductive Sciences (Course #5500) through the University of Pittsburgh Medical School process. Request for travel must be made four months prior to expected date of travel.
Prospective Sites (STIE/GHT)
